Written by Chrissie Alexander

Fertility is a beautiful expression of overall health and vitality.

As a naturopath, I believe in nurturing the body’s innate wisdom and creating the most supportive environment possible for conception to occur—naturally, gently, and with great care. An unfolding of body, heart and soul. Fertility is something we invite, not force.

Whether you are just beginning your journey or have been trying for some time, taking a holistic view of fertility can help restore balance, optimise wellbeing, and bring a sense of empowerment.

Fertility is a delicate dance of hormones, lifestyle, and emotional well-being. I believe in supporting the body to come into balance naturally, using the gifts of nutrition, lifestyle shifts, and key supplements.

Here, I share a gentle, holistic guide to enhancing fertility in a natural and nurturing way.

Understanding Hormonal Harmony

Hormones are messengers of the soul. Hormone balance is central to fertility. Issues such as low progesterone, high prolactin, inflammation, or thyroid and blood sugar imbalance can interfere with conception.

- Low progesterone often whispers in tearfulness, painful periods, short cycles, and difficulties conceiving.
- Inflammation may trigger excess oestrogen production quietly, even without signs like fibroids or endometriosis.
- Magnesium is a gentle mineral that soothes the nervous system and supports hormonal flow, supporting progesterone.
- Alcohol can muddy these delicate waters by raising oestrogen and burdening the liver.

Ways to Gently Support Hormonal Balance:

  • Sunshine on your skin and time outdoors & moderate exercise can boost progesterone
  • Herbal friends: Vitex (Chaste Tree), Withania (Ashwagandha), Ginger
  • Nutrients that nourish: Magnesium, Vitamin C, B vitamins, and dopamine-loving foods & nutrients

Sacred Nourishment for Fertility

Food is one of the most profound ways we communicate with our bodies and lays the groundwork for hormonal balance and overall reproductive health. A fertility-supportive diet is centred around:

  • Whole, fresh foods: Prioritising organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, sweet potatoes, legumes, nuts and seeds nourishes the body with essential vitamins and minerals.
  • Healthy fats: Avocados, coconut oil, grass-fed butter, olive oil, flaxseeds, walnuts, and oily fish (such as wild salmon or sardines) are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which support hormone production and reduce inflammation.
  • Protein variety: Incorporate plant proteins like lentils, chickpeas, and quinoa alongside ethically sourced grass-fed animal proteins, if desired, as well as nuts and seeds (preferably activated)
  • Mineral rich leafy greens: Broccoli, spinach, kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts
  • Fibre: To help excrete metabolised hormones and toxins
  • Filtered water: Essential for cellular health and hormone production
  • Blood sugar balance: Regular meals with good-quality protein, fibre and fats help stabilise blood sugar levels, supporting hormonal harmony.
  • Gently reduce inflammatory foods:
    - Limit refined sugars
    - Avoid deep fried foods
    - Non organic dairy (to minimise xenoestrogens and inflammatory load)
    - Highly processed foods
    - Excessive caffeine or alcohol
    - Known food intolerances (especially gluten and dairy), all of which can stress the reproductive system

Small, mindful changes often feel more sustainable than rigid restrictions — think of it as inviting more goodness in, rather than focusing on what to cut out.

Cultivating a Fertile Lifestyle

Our modern lives can be fast-paced and demanding, but fertility flourishes with gentleness, rest, and connection. Consider weaving these supportive practices into your daily rhythm:

  • Manage Stress Tenderly: Chronic stress can disrupt hormonal signalling. Practices such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing, journalling, or simply time in nature can be deeply restorative and help to reduce cortisol and protect progesterone levels.
  • Move Joyfully: Regular, moderate exercise that you enjoy, such as walking, swimming, or yoga enhances circulation, hormonal balance, vitality and lifts spirits, without overtaxing the body.
  • 🌿 Embrace nature: Daily sunlight exposure boosts vitamin D and progesterone.
  • Grounding (walking barefoot) soothes the nervous system.
  • Prioritising sleep: Aim for 7–9 hours of good-quality sleep each night in a dark room, to support melatonin, serotonin and hormonal balance and deep vital repair processes during deep rest.
  • Environmental awareness: Where possible, reduce exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in plastics, pesticides, and certain beauty products. Choose natural alternatives where you can.
  • Minimise Chemical Exposure: Choose organic food where possible, use natural cosmetics and cleaning products, and switch to organic sanitary products or a moon cup.
  • Protect Your Energy: Keep mobile phones away from reproductive areas and limit EMF exposure.

Above all, nurturing emotional wellbeing is equally important — feelings of hope, joy, and self-compassion are powerful allies on the fertility journey.

Key Nutritional Supplements for Fertility

Supplements can help bridge any nutritional gaps and beautifully support the body’s natural processes. As always, it’s best to work with a qualified practitioner for personalised recommendations, but common fertility-supportive nutrients include:

  • Magnesium: A balm for the nervous system, and hormone dance, supports progesterone, and aids detoxification
  • Folate (not folic acid): Essential for healthy cell division and foetal development; vital to prepare the body for healthy conception and early pregnancy
  • Vitamin D: Supports immune health, hormonal balance, and implantation.
  • Zinc: Vital for egg quality, sperm health, and hormone production.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: Anti-inflammatory and supportive of creating healthy hormones
  • CoQ10: Particularly beneficial for mitochondrial health and egg quality, especially for those over the age of 35.
  • Vitamin C: Supports progesterone production and protects sperm and egg health
  • Probiotics: Support gut health, the ‘second brain’ of hormonal balance

Cherished Herbal Allies:

  • Vitex (Chaste Tree): Supports progesterone and a tender supporter of the luteal phase
  • Maca: A nourishing root that balances hormones and boosts fertility in both women and men (use only until ovulation if trying to conceive)
  • Adaptogenic herbs: Such as ashwagandha, and shatavari, which gently nourish the adrenal glands and reproductive system (always best used under supervision)
  • Red Raspberry Leaf: Uterine tonic and rich in minerals
  • Nettle Leaf: Mineral-rich, adrenal supportive that clear and strengthen
  • Dandelion Root and Leaf: Supports liver detoxification
  • Red Clover: Harmonises hormones and deeply nourishes

Note: Always seek guidance when choosing herbs, especially if you are using fertility medications or hormonal treatments — the plants wish to work with you, not against your body's wisdom.

Remember: supplements are just that — a supplement to a foundation of good nutrition and self-care, not a replacement.

Men Matter Too!

Fertility is a shared journey.

  • Zinc-rich foods like oysters and pumpkin seeds
  • Vitamin C and antioxidants protect and vitalise sperm
  • Royal Jelly to boost testosterone and sperm motility
  • Healthy fats and antioxidants to protect sperm health

Additional Fertility Tips

💗 Look after thyroid health: Monitor basal body temperature and support with healthy carbs and iodine-rich foods.
💗 Support dopamine: Joyful activities and sunshine lower prolactin, which can enhance progesterone.
💗 Understand your fertile window: Days 11–18 of your cycle are key, with ovulation being the most fertile.
💗 Choose natural lubricants: Saliva, coconut oil, or Sylk to protect sperm vitality.

Emotional Wellness and Energetic Clearing - Tending the Heart and Spirit

Emotional blocks can quietly influence fertility. Create space to:

  • Grieve what needs grieving
  • Dream what longs to be dreamed
  • Speak fears and hopes aloud
  • Receive love, support, and healing

Energy work, emotional clearing, and gentle self-compassion open fertile spaces within. Fertility blooms where safety and trust are restored. Journaling, speaking with a counsellor, or practicing gentle energy work can help to clear subconscious fears or grief around conception. Opening the heart and softening the nervous system allows space for new life to grow.

Closing Thoughts

Fertility is a journey of deep nourishment, trust, and balance. By honouring your body with natural foods, mindful living, and the gentle support of herbs and supplements, you create a fertile ground for new beginnings.

Every woman’s path is beautifully unique. With patience, love, and the right support, your body can find its way back to its innate rhythms. Each small step is a powerful act of self-love and hope.

Trust your body's wisdom. Trust the seasons of your life. When you nourish yourself from the roots, when you soften into receiving, life finds a way.
