What beckons you into bed at night, is your bedroom a sanctuary space you long to spend time in?
It’s quite possibly the most important room in the house and one room where you spend at least a third of your life with an average of 9 hours a day. And, whilst you are likely to be asleep for 80% of that time, everything about the energy in that room will be influencing your room while you slumber.
With 58% of us struggling to fall asleep, it now appears sleep is one of the biggest contributing factors to maintaining a healthy brain and positive outlook on life.
So with the busy pace of modern life having a peaceful, restorative place to retreat too is now more important than ever.
I know as a busy mum it felt vital for me to have a sanctuary and place of refuge where no matter how chaotic life got I always had access to tranquillity. This sparked my curiosity about energy and how to take my styling to a deeper level and create a home that would feel peaceful but also energetically support my family.
Feng Shui literally means wind and water; the wind represents the unseen and the water represents the seen. This ancient practice defines the energy of an environment and what cures or placements of furniture will help to harness the most positive chi and create a wellbeing energy for the inhabitant to thrive. On a deeper level it incorporates nature's 5 elements earth, wood, fire, earth and metal.
Each of us is also a unique expression of these elements, so our body respond’s to what is surrounding us. Given the bedroom is most likely to influence our health the most it’s a wonderful place to initiate some Feng Shui adjustments.
So with this serenity in mind here are a few guidelines to attract that flow of peace and calm energy into your space:
- Ideally a bedroom is best located in the most yin aspect of the home where there is less light or sun, ideally on the southern side or perhaps the quietest room available. Yin feminine is reflected in a soft muted palette of colours with serene gentle tones that calm the mind and nervous system. For example a red wall in a bedroom room is more likely to fire up the yang energy which is perhaps more suited for a busy room like a kitchen or playroom.
Soft furnishings are also preferable, another yin feature like curtains and cushions will add to the feeling of comfort.
- A position of command is preferable for the bed so the bedroom door can be seen from the bed, in ancient times this was so you could see your enemy coming. However It is preferable for the bed not to be directly opposite the door this creates imbalance as the as energy will flow directly from your feet out the door. A bedhead promotes a supportive structure and foundation for additional support in life. An uncomfortable bed or one that has an imbalance of too much metal may be disrupting a good night’s sleep, so invest in a good bed with natural bedding that can breathe.
- According to Chinese Astrology we have auspicious and inauspicious directions that influence our life so if there has been considerable challenges or bad luck then it’s definitely worth looking deeper into what this direction may be for you and adjusting to that direction to restore harmony. I have experimented with this over the years and observed how it impacts our family.
- Clutter under the bed will disturb your quality of sleep and leak your energy, so try to avoid storing anything under there. My son certainly slept better once we removed all the toys stored from under his bed. In fact clearing any clutter from a bedroom is the quickest way to shift old stuck patterns out of your life and ensure a more tranquil existence. Calming images in your bedroom will attract the same energy however avoid too much yang water as it may attract increased emotion into this space and water a relationship down.
- Photographs of children or family are best for the lounge or common areas as they invite their energy and kill romance, so remove them from your bedroom if you prefer not to have late night visits from your children or any meddling from relatives.
- Whilst plants in the bedroom cleanse the air and invite nature in go easy as they represent the wood element which activates new growth and creativity which again is best reserved for other spaces in your home.

- I am personally not a big fan of mirrors in the bedroom, it is believed they double the energy they reflect so consider very carefully what is being reflected. They also represent the water element which can dampen a relationship. If you have one try covering it up at night and see what happens
- To activate romance in the bedroom, it’s powerful when you send a message to the universe that 2 people reside here, even if you're still dreaming that relationship in. Symmetrical designs like matching bedside tables and lamps strengthen the energy of a pair. Use colours that boost the heart chakra like soft pinks and greens. Burn candles to rekindle a well established relationship and display photo’s of your partner to solidify the relationship status.
- A room that is too yin or dark may cause depression or anxiety and may grow mould or harbour heavy energies that make you feel stuck. Regularly open up windows to invite nature in as the sunlight and wind will refresh the chi. I drive my teenagers nuts asking them to open their windows daily, it's a non negotiable for me.
- If there are any lingering musty smells then there is usually some lingering energy so burn some burn palo santo or sage to send any negativity on its way.
Try calming essential oils like lavender to anchor that sanctuary vibe, or this great Feng Shui cure of Frankincense and Orange in a diffuser to restore harmony.
- Technology in the bedroom is not recommended, it is a very metal element and stimulates the mental body. Many homes are out of balance in the metal energy because of technology, EMF’s are not natural or beneficial as they drain our energy so where possible switch it off at the power source for a good night’s sleep.
- Lastly crystals attract amazing energies into the home however avoid clear quartz crystals for the bedroom, even amethyst can be too activating for the third eye.
