How can Reflexology help you during pregnancy?

This article has been carefully created as a Comprehensive Guide to Pregnancy Reflexology where we will have Jill drawing upon and discussing in detail the Benefits, Techniques, and Safety of using this nurturing treatment throughout your journey.

What is Reflexology and how does it work?

Reflexology is a form of alternative medicine that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, face or ears to promote relaxation and healing. It is a natural, non-invasive therapy. It is believed that these reflex points on the feet and hands correspond to different organs and systems in the body, and by stimulating them, the body can restore balance and improve overall well-being.

Reflexology is based on the principle that the body has energy zones that run throughout the body, with reflex areas on the feet, hands, face and ears that correspond to different organs, glands, and systems. By applying pressure to these reflex areas, reflexologists believe that they can stimulate the flow of energy, reduce tension, and promote healing in the corresponding parts of the body.

Reflexologists are trained to identify the reflex areas on the feet and hands that correspond to different organs and systems in the body. They use their fingers, thumbs, and hands to apply pressure to these areas, and may also use tools such as wooden or rubber balls to help stimulate the reflex points.

Can reflexology help with common pregnancy discomforts like nausea and back pain?

The aim of reflexology treatments during pregnancy is relaxation and ease of any symptoms or anxieties. Many women report improvements in common conditions such as constipation, nausea, heartburn, back ache, mood swings, sleep deprivation, fatigue etc

The maternity journey is one that brings not only physical challenges as the foetus grows but also times where emotional support may be required. Supporting the woman with reflexology and a listening ear can provide many benefits.

The evidence is growing that having reflexology helps women through pregnancy and during the birth.

Does reflexology have any benefits for childbirth and labour?

Recent studies have shown that reflexology can significantly reduce pain during labour, reduce the length of the first stage of labour and lower anxiety scores of women in labour. It can also increase birth satisfaction, and stabilize vital signs in pregnant women. It's also been proven to help balance hormones that pregnancy creates, it can also help the physical effects of pregnancy such as morning sickness, digestive issues, anaemia and general aches and pains.

Can reflexology help with postpartum recovery and breastfeeding?

The postpartum period is typically considered to end within six weeks; however, it usually takes much longer to a new Mum to “recover/adjust” physically and emotionally into her new motherhood life. It is probably one of the most important times for a woman to receive reflexology as their priorities change and they have less time to look after themselves.

Reflexology will be able to support the new Mum by reducing stress, regulating hormones and milk production (if breastfeeding), bringing her body back to a non-pregnancy state.

How long do the effects of a reflexology session last?

During pregnancy, we recommend a reflexology treatment once a month so we can support the body and mind going through their major transformations.
During the last month of pregnancy, we would recommend having the sessions once a week in order to prepare the body to the birth.

Can reflexology help induce labour naturally?

Reflexology is a natural, non-invasive therapy. During the last month of pregnancy, the Reflexologist will use different techniques to bring the body to its best possible condition for the baby to come when the time is right.

So many women are afraid to have an induction. To avoid induction, an early preparation through reflexology, from the very beginning of the 9th month will be wise and effective.

How much does a reflexology session for pregnancy or birth typically cost?

Reflexology sessions for pregnancy are typically the same price as normal reflexology sessions. Prices can vary from +/-$90 to $150. Check with your local Reflexologist.
